How I think about this
Home and garden gear gets sold on how it looks in a styled photo. I care about the opposite: how it holds up on the tenth wash, the second season outside, the day you actually need it to do its job. A thing that looks the part and fails quietly is worse than one that's plain and lasts.
So I work out what it's made of, how it's meant to work, and where the corners were cut, then tell you plainly whether it'll still be earning its keep a year from now. I research rather than test, and I say so.
