How a battery lawn mower actually works

Strip away the marketing and a battery mower is really two decisions bolted together: what powers it, and what the deck is built from to survive that power. The Greenworks 40V system swaps a gas engine, with its oil, spark plug and pull cord, for a sealed 4.0Ah lithium battery that clicks in and drives the motor directly. No engine block means no engine weight, which is why this deck comes in 35% lighter than the steel-heavy gas mowers it's replacing. That weight loss is the whole point: a lighter deck means you're steering it around flower beds and slopes, not wrestling it. But lithium batteries store a fixed amount of energy, and that's the tradeoff nobody puts on the front of the box. A full charge on the 4.0Ah pack runs about 35 minutes, enough to cut roughly a third of an acre depending on how thick and wet the grass is and how fast you push. That number is the real spec here, more than the 16 inch cutting width or the five position height lever. It tells you exactly what kind of yard this machine was built for: modest, manageable, done in one sitting. The single-lever height adjustment and the 2-in-1 mulch-or-bag deck are nice conveniences, but they don't move that ceiling. And because the battery is the same 40V pack that runs Greenworks trimmers, blowers and chainsaws, buying into this system means buying into a battery, not just a mower, one you'll keep reusing around the yard for years after the mower itself.
