How I think about this

There's a right way to be cheap with tools and a right way to spend. Some tools you use twice a year and cheap is smart; others you'll trust with your hands and your project, and the budget one is a false economy. The trick is knowing which is in front of you.

I read a tool for how it's built, what it's actually good at, and the catch the listing skips, then tell you where your money changes the result and where it just changes the box. Researched, not shop-tested — I won't pretend to swing every one.
