Is HP 61XL Black Ink Worth It?

Here's the part the box doesn't spell out. An inkjet cartridge isn't just a bag of black liquid, it's a nozzle plate and a tiny chip that talks to your printer before a single drop moves. That chip tells the printer what ink is inside, how much is left, and whether it recognizes the cartridge as genuine. The XL designation just means a bigger internal reservoir than the standard cartridge, roughly 360 pages, so you're refilling less often for the same printing habits. The ink itself is water-based, formulated to sit flat on plain paper and resist fading, which is why text stays sharp and photos don't yellow sitting on a shelf. The catch is that this chip-and-nozzle pairing is model-specific: it's engineered against a defined list, DeskJet 1000 through 3510, Envy 4500 and 5530, OfficeJet 2620 and 4630, and outside that list the printer simply won't recognize it, however genuine the cartridge looks. That's also why yield numbers swing in real use, a page of dense graphics burns through ink faster than a page of double-spaced text, even from an identical cartridge.
