How crystal's mineral salt actually stops odor

Start with what crystal deodorant is not: it's not an antiperspirant. Antiperspirants use aluminum salts that dissolve into your sweat ducts and physically plug them, which is why they stop wetness. Crystal skips that step entirely. Its one ingredient, potassium alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt, sits on the surface of your skin instead of inside the duct. That distinction is the whole mechanism, and it explains almost everything else about how this product behaves. Odor isn't actually caused by sweat. Fresh sweat is nearly odorless; the smell shows up once bacteria on your skin start breaking it down. Mineral salt ions create a surface bacteria don't like living on, so they slow down, and without bacterial activity there's no odor to notice. You still sweat normally, you just don't smell the byproduct of it. That's why it goes on wet, dries fast, and disappears clear: there's no wax, oil, or aluminum compound left behind to cake, so nothing streaks your skin or stains a black shirt. It also explains the lavender and white tea note folded in. There's no fragrance load doing the covering up work here, so what you smell is closer to a light rinse than a perfume, which is also why it tends to sit fine on skin that reacts to stronger antiperspirant chemicals. The honest limit follows from the same mechanism: because it's controlling bacteria, not glands, it has nothing to offer against actual heavy sweating. It was never built to.
